History:
In 1912 the Society started a temporary Night Shelter for homeless men at 7 Great Stand Street, Dublin.
In 1995 a new wing was added giving each of the 74 resident a separate bedroom instead of the old dormitory accommodation. Up to this time the residents had to leave in the morning and could not return until the evening. It was decided to allow them to remain all day and they received a hot mid-day meal in addition to an evening meal and breakfast as formerly.
Two Conferences continue to provide a befriending service to the residents, St. Joseph the Worker during the day and St. Camillus de Lellis at night. These volunteers together with students from the Society’s Conference in UCD also organize activities, games etc. for the residents
Today:
As an emergency hostel the main objective is to provide safe and comfortable accommodation for men who find themselves homeless, to assist them in dealing with the problems which make them homeless and to prepare them for independent living.
A team of volunteers also provides a befriending service to men who have recently moved into independent accommodation to ensure that they are not experiencing problems which might cause them to become homeless again. During 2008 over 300 men passed through the hostel most of them to independent accommodation. Unusual among hostels in Dublin, the Society’s Back Lane Hostel is open access and as a result it is full every night.
