Stella Maris Seafarers' Conference

"It's their coming home when Seafarers visit us here"
Rose Kearney, SVP Stella Maris Conference

The SVP Stella Maris Conference, based in Beresford Place, Dublin, provides a warm welcome and an opportunity for Seafarers visiting Dublin to contact home. It has been providing this service for over 90 years.

We provide the opportunity to make calls to loved ones back home and generally to relax in an informal atmosphere for a few hours. There is transport to and from Dublin Port and also a shop selling clothes and toiletries at reasonable rates. Many Seafarers sometimes are not prepared for the Irish climate, so they can get what they need here said Rose Kearney, a volunteer Conference member.

"Most Seafarers want to talk about their families and how they are getting on. That's what our Conference members are good at - listening and chatting to people far away from home. English is the language of the sea, so most would have some English. We are here every evening from 7pm-11pm, 365 days a year, including Christmas Day. We get people of all nationalities and religions.

"We check every day what ships are in or expected in port so that we can give anyone who wants to come to the centre that opportunity. Our mini bus is well known in the Port and people are often waiting for us to call by at our picking-up points”.
