The Society in Ireland is always open to support projects that will help to make the Society in the twinned country more self-sustainable. The Dublin Regional Council has enabled the National Council of Zambia to buy 50 hectares of land near Lusaka. 30 hectares has been cultivated with groundnuts and beans and work is ongoing in developing the remaining 20 hectares as farmland and in establishing allied farming activities such as market gardening ("Irish" potatoes are a good cash crop in that area) and egg production.
To develop a farm of this size requires a good deal of resources but the objective is to equip the farm over the next two years so that it will be self-sustaining and can operate without external assistance providing a stream of revenue to fund the work of the Society in Zambia."
