"Mostly we provide some company for people who don't have regular visitors"
“Over the years, members build a relationship with people who are long-term in hospital who don't have many visitors. It can be lonely to be on your own when you are surrounded by fellow-patients who have regular visitors. That's where the SVP comes in: like any other visitor, we chat, bring the papers and small gifts. We might be asked to make a phone call or write a letter for a person, but mostly we provide company and a break in the routine."
"We notice that people are better off financially now and usually their basic requirements are met. But it's the human contact people miss. With people leading busy lives, there isn't always time for visiting family members or friends who are in hospital over a long period."
"We are usually asked by a patient's family or friends or by the nursing staff to make a visit. Carolyn Akintola, Hospital Visitation."
