The Cork Region has a number of housing projects located throughout the city and county. One example is shown below;
West Cork Social Housing Project
A "retirement village" costing €2.5m.was built by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in West Cork, in association with the local Community Care Group. The development provides a high level of special facilities for senior citizens. The houses are constructed around a Resource Centre.
The Society says the purpose of the Sheltered Housing Project is to give residents "a good quality of life in retirement so that they are not dependent on institutional care and are close to services, such as - church, medical surgery, public transport, shops, post office and so on and here they will continue to be part of the local community.
One hectare of land was acquired from the Diocesan Trustees and planning permission was obtained from the Cork County Council. Construction work began in April, 2006 and fourteen residential units, 8 of one-1 bedroom and 6 of 2-bedrooms were built as well as a Resource Centre. Exchequer funding of €2,114,556 was sanctioned and the balance donated by the local Conference and the Cork Regional office. The official opening took place on June 23rd 2007 when the complex was blessed by the local Parish Priest Fr Michael Nolan.
