The 5th class students of Glasheen Boys School along with their teacher Ms Ciara Bowe developed an innovative school project to help raise much needed funds for the Society of Saint Vincent De Paul over the Winter season. They developed “Reindeer Food”.

According to Ms Ciara Bowe Class Teacher:
‘Reindeer Food is a very simple idea. The boys packaged specially bought reindeer food …’ (which was nutritious and full of vitamins to boost the energy of the Reindeer!)and …‘they sourced clear plastic wrap (a local florist: Fiona Donnelly at Flowers in Bloom, donated it to the cause) with ribbon (from the same florist) & napkins.

They then designed, printed and backed labels for the Reindeer food and packaged it all together. The boys took turns going around the school to sell it. They printed notes for the parents of younger boys and put posters in each class room.

They sold the Reindeer Food for €1 each and sold it across the month of December. We were often sold out and had to acquire and package more! There were a number of accountants who kept track of the incoming and outgoing money!

The boys raised approximately €200 and decided to split the money between two charities - a local one - the Society of Saint Vincent De Paul, and one working in a developing country (Bothar). The choice of charities was entirely their decision. They worked very hard and are very proud of the amount they raised.’

The SVP would like to sincerely thank all the students, parents and teachers who helped with this wonderful school project.
