Volunteering at Kerdiffstown

Like any charitable organisation, SVP Kerdiffstown relies on the support of volunteers to carry out its necessary work. Volunteering is at the heart of everything we do and is integral to the unique experience we are able to provide for our many guests and visitors.

This is particularly true through our core work in the summer months, for our guests and holidaymakers in knowing that they are being cared for and looked after by people who are giving freely of their time and energy with an intrinsic motivation based on nothing else but wanting to help.

Each year, Kerdiffstown benefits from around 20,000 volunteer hours. This is equivalent to around 10 full time permanent staff members, which we simply could not afford. The financial benefits are clear. However, the benefits to our guests and indeed to our volunteers themselves are much more important.

Volunteering at Kerdiffstown is based on the principles of Serve and Learn. We believe there is much truth in the statement that, ‘It is in giving, we receive’.
As we serve the people whom most need and deserve our service, our capacity to learn grows exponentially. We learn practical skills in hospitality, facilities and care, we learn how better to be with our different others, and we gain a greater understanding of the values of respect, appreciation, inclusion, and belonging. We learn how to listen – which is not as easy as it sounds. We become important members in this great SVP family, and we take away skills and experience, which are easily carried into our future lives and careers.

And it’s a lot of fun! Kerdiffstown exudes Enjoyment, Warmth and Friendship – a wisecrack and the sound of hearty laughter is never far away and our volunteers play the leading role in this. It is an experience you will never forget, and our current volunteers will testify that you will want to come back for more.

Ways to volunteer:

Each week in the summer season we have around 10 volunteer stewards who accompany the hundred or so guests (usually a ratio of 1 steward to 10 guests). These stewards come from all backgrounds, age and abilities and all have a unique contribution to give.

Their work may include

  • Pre-arrangements for the week’s holiday, assisting the week’s head steward
  • Assisting with travel arrangements and other logistics
  • Helping guests through the check-in process on arrival
  • Assisting at meal-times and refreshments
  • Arranging and participating in activities, events, games and competitions
  • Being a point of social contact, available for a chat over a cuppa.
  • Lending a hand around the centre and grounds

How to get involved

If you are interested in becoming a steward, please contact our membership support officer, Maria Pete-Sorensen on (01) 8198449 or email

House volunteering

Kerdiffstown is always on the lookout for volunteers to assist in all its departments on site throughout the year. We welcome people from all ages, backgrounds and abilities. There is work here to suit everyone. Arrangements and times are flexible to suit the capacities of the individual volunteers.
This includes, or can be a combination of,

  • Housekeeping
  • Catering and food and beverage service
  • Reception
  • Hosting groups
  • Maintenance and Gardening
  • Admin and Marketing support
  • Activities and Entertainment

We have a core professional staff team here to provide support and guidance, and all appropriate and necessary training will be provided.
From this, you may even wish to join our volunteer committee (The Conference of St. Corban’s is Kerdiffstown’s Special Works Conference of the SVP East Region) assisting in the centre’s management and getting involved with fundraising events and helping to shape our work.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Days

We are fortunate to have made strong relationships with some local businesses who support us and international business organisations with presence in Ireland and have benefitted from hugely successful CSR or Impact Days where a group of colleagues come together to volunteer at our centre for a day (or two!) to carry out a work project, which will enhance our facilities and grounds. This is usually a million miles from their day job, but everyone gets stuck in with gusto, whether they are painting bedrooms, landscaping gardens, surfacing new pathways, weeding, sowing grass seeds, etc., etc. There is a great sense of camaraderie within the team and what we call a win-win-win

  • The Centre benefits from the outcomes of the actual work
  • The Company benefits from a sense of Building Team as well as the individual’s satisfaction that comes from volunteering a day’s work. (It’s not bad PR either!)
  • Our guests see a day’s display of genuine altruism from a group of people, here to further improve their holiday experience

The Garden Volunteers

The volunteers descended
On Kerdiffstown one day
Bright young men and women
All ready for the fray.

Their battle was a big one
To clear the ground of weeds
To plant some lovely flowers
And nourish little seeds.

The residents of Kerdiffstown
Astonished at the sight
Of all that youthful energy
At work from morn ‘til night.

It was a ray of sunshine
To gladden any heart
To view the transformation
Accomplished from the start.

May God bless all the people
Who organise such work
And all the volunteers
Who give of all their work.
