SVP sends out message of hope to those in need during pandemic

St Vincent de Paul members across Northern Ireland today sent out a message of hope to their local communities asking local people to please seek help during the pandemic.

While some people who are not used to seeking help may now need it through a change in circumstances from furlough or job loss, members of the charity have said that they should not be embarrassed about picking up the phone to confidentially ask for assistance no matter how big or how small the help they require might be.

Patrick Friel, Interim Regional President, said: “SVP NI wants to offer hope to those in need. One of our volunteers is at the other end of the helpline and we would urge people to get in touch if they need practical help or emotional support. Whether you need help with food, utility bills, school uniforms, clothing for your children and even toiletries, we are here to help, not judge. There are willing volunteers ready to listen.

“As well as offering help to local people, the society would also be willing to accept help from people who may now find themselves with more free time on their hands. If they would like to give of their free time and consider becoming a member or volunteer of SVP NI, we would like to hear from them too.”

SVP NI is also beginning to reopen its shops and staff have been issued with PPE in order to meet the regulations set out to reopen safely.

Patrick added: “We would like to also thank those who have continued to donate to SVP NI during the crisis as these donations are vital to the support we are able to provide.”
