SVP supports over 2,000 students beginning third level studies with €3m spend

As third-level colleges and universities reopen for the 2026/2027 academic year, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) reports that its Education Bursaries are supporting over 2,000 students who faced financial difficulties meeting the costs of third-level education.
The SVP Bursary and Training Fund has provided over €3 million to students for laptops, books, materials, travel, course fees, accommodation, and the other expenses which can push learning out of their reach.
SVP bursaries are managed by Committees and Conferences throughout the country, providing local grants to students.
Grant amounts typically range between €500 and €3,000 depending on the local fund and circumstances.
The SVP Education and Training Bursary Fund has been established to support students of all ages who may financially struggle to access or stay in third level education and training programmes.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul recognises the importance of further education and that for many people accessibility and affordability are real barriers to obtaining a third-level education and training.
Teresa Ryan, SVP National President, said, “We believe that education is a key element in breaking the cycle of poverty, and the impact of struggling to achieve third-level success is not just on the students but on their families as well. One recipient of a grant from SVP describes her mother’s reaction: “Mam was thrilled. She never had an education. If you have lived around poverty all your life, it’s a gift to see your child on the path out of it.”
Teresa Ryan added, “Our ability to support students is only possible with the generous donations received by individual and corporate donors.”
Niamh Dalziel, SVP Research and Policy Officer, says, “For most students, the transition from second to third level education will go smoothly. But for others, the financial burden will mean that their future is being decided not by their ability or success in school but by financial support not keeping up with the real cost of attending third level".
SVP’s Bursary for Education and Training focusses on assisting students setting out on their education journey, including primary degrees, training and apprenticeships.
