SVP calls for public support this Christmas as more than 250,000 calls for help expected this year

With requests for help set to exceed 250,000 this year, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) today launched its Annual Appeal, urging public support for families under pressure. This year’s theme, ‘The Wonder of Christmas’, reflects the rising calls from people ‘wondering’ how they will put food on the table, keep homes warm, and afford toys this December.
Speaking at the launch, SVP National President Teresa Ryan said ‘This Christmas, too many parents are wondering how they’ll manage the basics. At the end of October the number of calls for requests for help were up 7% on last year, and we expect overall requests for 2025 to exceed 250,000. Our Appeal asks the public to share the wonder of Christmas by helping families with the essentials—food on the table, a warm home and a little joy for children.’
‘The recent Budget provided some welcome measures, but rising costs mean many households still cannot afford the basics, especially one-parent families, low-income workers, people with disabilities and their carers, and those in insecure housing. Every donation ensures we can respond quickly and locally where need is greatest.’
How SVP supports families
Immediate essentials: In 2025 €41m will be spent providing food vouchers, grocery supports and direct assistance to households to help alleviate the 105,000 children living in consistent poverty and 845,000 people who are going without basics
Keeping homes warm: €6m will be spent on fuel to support the 1 in 12 people going without heating and 300,000 households currently in electricity arrears
Education and opportunity: €5m spent on supports for schoolbooks, uniforms, transport, device access and fees so children can take part like their classmates
Local, personal help: almost 500,000 home visitations to deliver confidential and practical assistance from volunteers in every community
Advice and advocacy: signposting to services, budgeting support and engagement with agencies to prevent debt and homelessness.
Broadcasters Marty Whelan and Mary Kennedy officially launched the Annual Appeal this year and there was performances from the Dublin Gospel Choir and Malachi Cush.
SVP Head of Fundraising Elizabeth Smyth outlined the communication campaign and encouraged workplaces, community groups and schools to take part in fundraising or hosting a Christmas Jumper Day for SVP, ‘There is a deep warmth towards the Society’s work. With the public’s generosity, we can bring help and hope to families who need it most, and ensure children can experience the wonder of Christmas.’
