SVP Celebrates 180 years in Ireland

On April 20th, nearly 1000 people gathered at Dublin’s Convention Centre to celebrate the 180th anniversary of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) in Ireland. The event was marked by excitement, music from the No. 1 Army Band, and lively interactions among attendees.

Formal Program Highlights

The formal program began with a powerful introduction by Rose McGowan, SVP’s National President, emphasising the society's history, mission, and future challenges. Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson delivered the keynote speech, addressing the climate crisis and social injustices. We were honoured to hear from SVP's International President, Jose Manuel Buergo Gomez, who underscored the Society's international reach. Kevin Cunningham, CEO of Ireland Thinks presented some findings as to what Ireland may look like in the years to come.

Messages of Support

The event received congratulatory messages from dignitaries including President Michael D. Higgins, Taoiseach Simon Harris, and former Presidents Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese. These messages highlighted the invaluable contributions of SVP volunteers and the society's impact on Irish communities.

Interactive Sessions and Exhibitions

The day featured "On the Couch" sessions where volunteers and Young SVP representatives shared their experiences. Exhibitions and advice stands provided valuable information from SVP staff and partner organisations like MABS and the Citizens Information Service.

Closing Remarks and Mass

The celebration concluded with a Mass of Thanksgiving, led by Father Michael McCullagh, Father Jim Noonan, and Father Jose Alves. The event was a testament to SVP's enduring legacy and its ongoing commitment to support those in need.

As we reflect on the last 180 years, and look ahead to the next, we are grateful to all who work to support those in need. Our Volunteers, Members, Staff and Donors are the lifeblood of the Organisation. Ireland has seen huge changes since 1844, and as we move to the future, we remember the event's slogan. SVP - Changing Times, Continuing Compassion.
