Celebrating 180 Years of SVP in Ireland

On Saturday, April 20th, Saint Vincent de Paul celebrated 180 years of dedication to serving those in need across Ireland.

The event took place at a spectacular members' day at the Convention Centre in Dublin, where nearly 1,000 Members gathered to celebrate this huge milestone.

A day of conversation and camaraderie

The event featured several high profile speakers. SVP's National President, Rose McGowan, opened the celebrations, and delivered a passionate address about SVP’s enduring mission, which underscored the day's theme of "Changing Times, Continuing Compassion."

In the Keynote Address, Former President of Ireland, and Chair of the Council of Elders, Mary Robinson, championed the values of empathy and solidarity. We were also delighted to be joined by SVP's International President, Juan Manuel Buergo Gomez, who highlighted the organisation's global reach.

The day was brilliantly compered by RTE's Marty Whelan, whose warmth and wit added colour to the proceedings.

The Broad Reach of SVP

Throughout the morning, attendees discovered more about the broad reach of SVP's work. We explored the crucial roles of home visitation and social housing, heard firsthand how SVP has boosted the educational prospects of young people, and discussed the Society's drive towards sustainability.

SVP into the Future

The afternoon session looked ahead to what the future holds for our Society and for Ireland. Kevin Cunningham, CEO of Ireland Thinks, guided the audience through a presentation on potential future changes in Ireland. The day concluded with insights from Young SVP members, who represent the future of our organization and shared their perspectives enthusiastically.

Thank you

Reflecting on 180 years of service, we are extremely grateful for the dedication of our members, volunteers, donors, and partners. Here’s to another 180 years of impactful service, driven by our core values of compassion, kindness, and solidarity. Together, let's forge a brighter, more inclusive future.
